The Department of Ophthalmology, Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital provides eye care services for residents in the state of Kedah Darul Aman. It also serves as the northern regional (Kedah, Perlis, Pulau Pinang & North Perak) referral subspecialty centre for Glaucoma, Vitreoretina & Cornea services. Its core business includes:

1.       Provider of tertiary eye care service

2.       Provider of secondary eye care service

3.       Provider of emergency eye care service

4.       Provider of Optometry & Visual Rehabilitation Service

5.       Prevention of Blindness

6.       Research & Quality Assurance

7.       Medical Reports & SOCSO (PERKESO)

8.       Training & Retraining human talent


1.1  Tertiary eye care service

1.1.1              Glaucoma, Vitreoretina and Cornea subspecialty services are headed by Trained

                    Consultant Ophthalmologists in their respective fields.


1.2  Secondary eye care service

1.1.2              General ophthalmology service overseen by a Comprehensive Subspecialist provides

                    amongst others, services such as cataract surgery and management of diabetic


1.1.3              Surgery is conducted in the main theatre complex on working days.

Cataract surgery is conducted on Saturdays to reduce the waiting time.

Day Care surgery is conducted for cataract and pterigium.


1.3  Emergency eye care service is available 24 hours daily


1.4  Optometry & Visual Rehabilitation Services provide refraction, visual field, low visual aid and other special ocular test.

1.5  Prevention of Blindness focuses on activities to reduce blindness from diabetic retinopathy, cataract and refractive error in children.

1.6  Research & Quality Assurance

i.          There are 3 NIAs and 7 KPI to be achieved by the department

ii.         National Eye Database provides data about cataract surgery, diabetic retinopathy,

cornea and glaucoma registry

iii.        Continuous Professional Development (CPD) and Continuous Medical Education (CME) to nurture and generate staff talent

iv.        Client satisfaction and Client Charter to engage, promote and sustain high quality service

HSBAS is a recognized higher learning and training centre for Masters in Ophthalmology and subspecialty in glaucoma and vitreoretina.
